Warning: Pink munchkinness overload ahead
Yes, I am way too proud of myself for making Olivia's munchkin costume almost entirely by hand and am going to shamelessly post a million pictures of it. Plus, she's so cute, I couldn't decide which ones were best.
To be a munchkin (along with any other kindergartner or 1st grader who wanted to be) in Wizard of Oz, I had to make Olivia a full, gathered, ankle-length outfit with a petticoat underneath. She got to choose her colors and of course she chose hot pink with electric blue as an accent color. We had a really fun daughter-mother outing where we picked butterfly themed fabric and an easy-to-sew pattern. Here is the outcome.
I was way too concerned with making it too small and it wouldn't fit, so I overcompensated and it fit like a tent, so the belt was an add-on to make it fit more snug.
She was also required to do something fun and crazy with her hair OR wear something matching on her head. Since we are keeping her hair short I opted for making something. I made a triangle scarf type thing with elastic to keep it snug with matching fabric. I definitely wanted something comfortable she could re-do herself and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. You can kinda see it from the back view.
For the petticoat I got a skirt from a thrift store and sewed some sparkly pink fabric from the remnant bin around the bottom. It shows just enough and matches perfectly although the camera doesn't catch the colors very well.
The shirt underneath was from the thrift store as well. Luckily her tennis shoes fit the requirements for black shoes and I found matching socks in the Target dollar bin.
It even passes the mobility and comfortably test shown by practicing some of the movements that she'll be doing in just over a month.
Watch out Wizard of Oz goers, you might be blinded by cuteness.
